Applications of undergraduate electricity and magnetism in the MIST-1 and MIST-2 ion sources
We present an introduction to the applications of ion optics, particularly those relevant to the Multicusp Ion Source Technology at MIT (MIST) ion sources that are currently being developed for the Isotope Decay-at-Rest (IsoDAR) experiment at Yemilab, including a set of undergraduate-level electricity and magnetism problems one could pose about ion optical components. The first problem shows the use of a dipole magnet as a mass spectrometer and the focusing properties of a sector dipole. The second shows the mass-to-charge ratio independence of electrostatic lenses, first approximating the lenses without an aperture, then with a small aperture.
