Towards Holistic Rural Development: Challenges, Progress and Pathways in India
Rural development remains pivotal to India’s economic trajectory, aimed at alleviating poverty and enhancing productivity across its vast agrarian landscape. This study critically examines the efficacy of major rural development schemes, namely the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP), Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Utilising secondary data from academic journals, government reports and statistical sources, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of these initiatives’ impacts on land issues, socio-economic growth, infrastructure development and employment generation. The study finds that while DILRMP has improved land-record transparency, challenges in data accuracy and dispute resolution persist. PMAY-G has made significant strides in providing durable housing, yet issues in beneficiary selection and fund disbursement need addressing. PMGSY has notably enhanced rural road connectivity, but road quality and maintenance require ongoing attention. MGNREGA’s role in generating employment and creating durable assets underscores its importance in rural poverty alleviation and environmental conservation, despite bureaucratic inefficiencies and implementation challenges. This research highlights the need for continuous policy refinement and effective monitoring to bolster these schemes’ contributions to rural development.
