The Role of Regional Rural Banks in Financial Inclusion: A Case Study of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank
The study explores the journey of India’s regional rural banks in promoting financial inclusion through a case study of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank (AGVB). It highlights AGVB’s role in advancing financial inclusion in Assam through its expanding branch network, robust credit flow to priority sectors and vulnerable groups, rise in microfinance outreach, along with successful implementation of various government initiatives. A multivariate regression analysis is also carried out using secondary data from 2006–2007 to 2023–2024, which reveals that the bank’s branch network and credit–deposit ratio have a significant positive influence on Assam’s economic growth. However, challenges persist in terms of low levels of financial literacy and digital inclusivity, particularly in rural areas. By drawing on global best practices, the study recommends strengthening the ‘access-usage-quality’ dimensions of financial inclusion to enhance AGVB’s digital capabilities and support India’s aspirational journey to become a developed and equitable nation under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
