Exploring Joyful Learning in English Language Teaching: A Qualitative Psycholinguistic Perspective

This study was motivated by students' low learning motivation, limited vocabulary use, and lack of confidence in English language learning. Although previous studies have reported the benefits of Joyful Learning, limited research has qualitatively explored its implementation from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study aimed to explore the implementation of Joyful Learning in English language teaching through a qualitative psycholinguistic perspective. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving one English teacher and 32 eighth-grade students at MTs Darul Hikmah Ngompak. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and learning motivation questionnaires as supporting data. Data credibility was ensured through source and method triangulation, while analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that Joyful Learning was implemented through educational games, storytelling, role-play, ice-breaking activities, and interactive multimedia, creating an engaging and student-centered learning environment. Classroom observations and interviews revealed behavioral and psycholinguistic indicators, including greater participation, increased confidence in using English, more active vocabulary use, reduced signs of language anxiety, and greater willingness to communicate. These findings suggest that positive emotional engagement and meaningful learning experiences may support second language learning processes. Rather than demonstrating direct cognitive or phonetic improvement, the study provides qualitative evidence of observable learner behaviors that are consistent with psycholinguistic theories of language learning. The study highlights the value of qualitative inquiry for understanding English language learning from a psycholinguistic perspective.
