Fly Ash Replacement in Conventional Concrete: Mechanical Performance and Finite Element Modelling Using ABAQUS
AbstractFly ash can reduce Portland cement demand in concrete, but its influence on mechanicalperformance depends on replacement level, binder chemistry, water-to-binder ratio, curing age andconcrete type. This review examines evidence on conventional fly ash concrete and considers howexperimental findings can inform finite element modelling in ABAQUS. The review draws on 36records exported from the author’s Mendeley library, the author-supplied dissertation literaturereview chapter, and targeted searches of publisher and scholarly pages to verify selected records. The available evidence was screened at title and abstract/metadata level; full texts for all 36 recordswere not available for independent examination. Studies consistently indicate that fly ash mayreduce early-age strength while supporting later-age strength development and durability, althoughthe magnitude and direction of change vary across mixtures. Experimental studies also show that nosingle replacement percentage is universally optimal. Finite element research demonstrates thevalue of nonlinear modelling for capturing load, deflection and cracking, while highlighting theneed for material-specific calibration and validation. The review identifies a gap in integratedmodelling of conventional concrete cubes across multiple grades and replacement levels, particularly where predicted damage fields are not validated against independent measurements.Because database-level search logs and all full texts were unavailable, this manuscript is atransparent preliminary systematic-review draft rather than a claim of exhaustive PRISMAcompliant coverage.
