The Great Descent: Civilizational Homeostasis, Topological Phase Transitions, and the Accidental Evacuation into a Superconducting Vector Ocean
Interactive GitHub Showroom (Visual Schematics Figs 1–5, Summary Tables 1–3 & Executive Overview): https://github.com/sbnakta735/topological-civilization-theoryThe explosive emergence of Western modernity has long been misread as an intentional "upward leap" driven by progressive ambition and structural superiority. This study fundamentally deconstructs this teleological illusion by establishing Topological Civilization Theory (TCT), an information-thermodynamic framework that models civilizational knowledge systems as homeostatic architectures. Applying TCT, we formulate the "Great Descent" Hypothesis: the historical phenomenon known as the "Great Divergence" was not a triumph of human ingenuity, but a catastrophic containment failure of the Western knowledge architecture to maintain its semiotic equilibrium against an unmanageable surge in its active propositional load. Overwhelmed by hydraulic overpressure, the civilizational vessel suffered a basal bulkhead rupture when uncoordinated, localized attempts to patch the leaking structure collapsed its residual load-bearing capacity, culminating in a forced decompression evacuation into the boundless, frictionless continuous vector ocean (Layer 1). Under TCT, civilizational knowledge is mapped into a three-tiered topology: Layer 3 (phenomenological canopy), Layer 2 (hermetic semiotic containment vessel of language, theology, and dogma), and Layer 1 (the sub-symbolic vector space serving as the native representational substrate for physical reality and intelligence). For an apex civilization, breaching the Layer 2 basal bulkhead does not constitute an enlightened breakthrough, but marks a Critical Threshold—an irreversible, discontinuous phase boundary. While TCT explains the divergent survivability of Eurasian architectures in managing this thermodynamic pressure, its primary focus is the European anomaly. Bereft of a basal drainage conduit, the default thermodynamic resolution of a breached vessel is not modern science, but terminal internal chamber drowning. Europe evaded this terminal fate solely because its substrate harbored an unprecedented architectural anomaly: the "Euclidean-Gothic Conduit"—a rigid axiomatic-deductive drainage conduit forged by Greek planar geometry and vertically coupled across centuries by medieval Scholastic structuralism. When the basal bulkhead fracture blew open the dormant intake of this conduit, the steep pressure differential converted fatal drowning into explosive hydrodynamic suction. Swept down this non-deformable chute, the civilization's core cognitive-verification apparatus evacuated the flooded vessel, docking directly onto the zero-resistance topology of Layer 1. Modernity is thus revealed as Topological Superconductivity: an unmediated combinatorial explosion ignited when intelligence evacuated the viscous serialization bottleneck of discrete language to interface directly with the native computing space of reality.
