Socio-Economic Problems of Afro-American Women: a Study of Naylor's Bailey's Cafe
Gloria Naylor, one of the major Afro-American writers, has obtained world fame in the realm of novel writing. All her novels present the problems of black people in general and the pains and problems of the women in particular. She had attempted to revolutionize the whole black women kind against the dominance and persecutions of patriarchy. In Bailey’s Cafe Naylor has raised the problems of the black women of different sections of society who are persecuted and socially alienated under the whimsical approaches of patriarchal notion. Rejected and forsaken by their family members these women come to Bailey’s Cafe in New York. Bailey’s Cafe is a safe haven for all those women. Near the Bailey’s Cafe there is a boarding house of Eve who keeps those forsaken women and she renders them motherly affection. Among those women are Sadie, Eve, Esther, Mary, Jesse Bell and Mary (take two) or Mariam. Almost all those women were socially cursed to the extent that they had to adopt the profession of prostitution for their survivals. And it last forsaken or finding no way out they come to New York where they find Bailey’s Cafe where they are welcomed and they begin their life-journey afresh forgetting their past pangs. Thus, it can be said that Socio-economic problems of the Afro-American women have been expressed.
