Understanding — Choully · An Inhabited Year

Understanding — Choully · An Inhabited Year is the tenth and closing monograph in PH-II — Ten Philosophical Monographs on the Human in the World. The monograph follows one inhabited year in and around Choully, in the Geneva countryside, to examine how understanding deepens while every knower remains inside the world being understood. Soil, masonry, roots, insects, birds, vines, orchard trees, weather, fermentation, records and human institutions carry histories at different speeds. Their processes precede any single act of recognition, while observation can reconnect traces, mechanisms and consequences across time. The eight movements unfold from late winter to the following autumn. A wall and the soil beneath it carry geological, biological and human durations. Pear blossom and repeated bee visits lead into fertilization and fruit development. A spring frost differentiates tissues according to position and developmental state. Ant pathways, rain and displaced clay show how local histories alter later possibilities. A vine leaf infected by Plasmopara viticola carries infection, physiology, mechanical damage and senescence through one organ without reducing them to a single process. Later movements follow a juvenile bird learning through encounters, then enter the harvest cellar, where two baskets and two records expose a discrepancy that becomes intelligible only when tare, sorting stages and material operations are reconnected. Geneva's longer institutional history enters the horizon through property, archives, science, finance and international organizations, while remaining one temporal layer among others rather than an external frame governing the landscape. The closing movement returns to leaf fall, bark, rain, litter, wall and soil. Human understanding has deepened, yet the causal history of the place continues through configurations that exceed any single perspective. The final root enters a small opening produced by the year's prior transformations. Understanding closes PH-II with a form of epistemic depth that does not convert knowledge into command: profondeur sans domination. The biological and historical scenes are literary composites grounded in the explicit references listed in the monograph. They are not presented as observations of particular individual organisms or parcels beyond the documented public context.
