The block universe vs becoming paradox
The nature of time remains one of the most intractable problems at the intersection of physics and philosophy. General Relativity describes a static, four-dimensional "Block Universe" in which past, present, and future are equally real, and time does not flow. Conversely, phenomenology and process philosophy insist on the undeniable reality of "Becoming"—the lived, directional flow of time and the emergence of novelty. For a century, these two views have been treated as irreconcilable. We propose a structural resolution using the 2D heuristic of intelligibility. The paradox dissolves when the Block Universe is correctly assigned to the Invariant Face (the timeless, mathematical structure of the manifold) and Becoming is assigned to the Contingent Face (the actualization of events, entropy production, and lived experience). The two are not competing realities; they are or- thogonal axes of a single entity. The Interface—the localized, self-recursive point of actualization—is the operative coupling between them. This framework dissolves the paradox, unifies the perspectives of Einstein and Bergson, and provides the structural justification for the layered manifold of time.
