Digital documentation and dissemination of campus flora using QR codes at Desh Bhagat University Punjab India

Abstract The present study aimed to document the floristic diversity of Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, and to develop a QR code-based digital system for rapid dissemination of plant information. A comprehensive floristic survey was conducted across the campus, resulting in the identification of 67 plant species belonging to 45 families, comprising trees (61.19%), shrubs (22.39%), herbs (8.96%), and climbers (7.46%). Detailed taxonomic and ecological information for each species was compiled into a structured digital repository supported by geo-tagged photographic records. Each plant species was assigned a unique digital profile linked through QR (Quick Response) codes, which were generated and installed on-site for real-time access via smartphones. A total of 67 QR codes were successfully implemented and validated for functionality. The practical usability of the QR code-based system was demonstrated on-campus user interaction, with users accessing species-specific plant information by scanning the displayed QR codes using smartphone devices. The system provides a convenient and interactive means of disseminating botanical information and supports digital access to campus plant diversity. The integration of QR code technology provides an interactive and accessible approach for disseminating botanical information alongside conventional plant labelling. The developed system provides a scalable, cost-effective, and interactive approach for biodiversity documentation and environmental education. Despite minor limitations related to environmental factors affecting QR code scanning, the overall framework demonstrates strong potential for replication in other academic institutions and green spaces. This study highlights the role of digital innovations in bridging traditional taxonomy with modern information technologies, thereby contributing to sustainable and technology-driven learning environments.
