Adoption of agile and scrum in AEC: a state-of-the-art review and transformation framework

Purpose This study examines how agile and scrum project management methods, which emerged from information technology, have found a methodological shift in the AEC sector. This methodological shift has led to contextual adaptations and scrutiny of the benefits and barriers for transitioning to agile project management from traditional project management. Design/methodology/approach A mixed bibliometric and systematic literature review was conducted using Scopus and Web of Science databases. A total of 178 records were identified, with 110 meeting the inclusion criteria. Publication trends, keyword co-occurrences and thematic analyses were examined using VOSviewer, and a structured coding protocol was followed. Findings Agile and scrum practices, characterized by adaptability, collaboration and iterative development, brought new insights to overcome barriers in traditional project delivery, such as schedule slippage, cost overruns and stakeholder fragmentation. The study provides sixteen methodological shifts needed for an agile transition and proposes an Agile Transformation framework that aligns planning, contractual, cultural and technological enablers. Research limitations/implications The review is restricted to English-language journal articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. Future empirical validation should test the framework across different contractual settings. Practical implications The framework offers practical pathways for practitioners to co-development for early validation of design for agile project delivery, connecting sprints reviews to project budgeting and adaptive procurement, aligning with flexible contractual practices. Originality/value This is the first comprehensive synthesis combining bibliometric and systematic analyses of agile and scrum in AEC, offering a novel Agile Transformation framework that bridges the gap between theory and practice.
