The Opioid Crisis in the News, 2019–2026: Attention, Geography and Tone of Global Coverage, and How It Compares with Research and Invention

We measure how the opioid crisis was covered in a global news index from January 2019 to July 2026, using 169,188 de-duplicated articles about opioids, fentanyl, heroin and drug overdose, and set that coverage beside 58,820 research papers and 2,908 patent families. All results are coverage measures, not counts of harm. Six results stand out: Falling attention. The topic took 18.63 of every 10,000 news articles in 2019 and 10.03 in 2025, a 46.2% fall in share. The low point was 2020, 49.4% below 2019. Peak. The highest monthly share was August 2019, at 22.93 articles per 10,000, the month of a state court ruling in an opioid lawsuit. Geography. The United States holds 71.0% of located coverage, 1.47 times its share of all news. Canada (1.59), Mexico (3.3), Pakistan (2.04) and Myanmar (7.86) are also over-represented, while India (0.74) and the United Kingdom (0.58) are not. Within India, Mizoram (32.98), Punjab (11.02) and Assam (5.81) lead; within the United States, Kentucky (2.93), Oregon (2.59) and West Virginia (2.46). Tone and urgency. 72.9% of articles are negative in tone (all news: 33.6%), and 91.5% carry a machine-assigned critical priority (all news: 42.6%). Vocabulary. Fentanyl appears in the opening of 40,934 articles, more than heroin (33,226). Harm reduction is far more specific to the topic than enforcement (lift 375.51 against 66.59). Research and invention. Opioid papers doubled as a share of the literature from 2015 to 2019 (4.96 to 10.23 per 10,000) and then fell 16.9% by 2025. Patent families per year fell 25.4% from 2016 to 2024.
