Breeding the Terrestrial Rainbow: Notes on Brazilian Galliwasp (Diploglossus lessonae) at BION Terrarium Center
In recent decades, the captive breeding of rare reptiles and amphibians has evolved far beyond a specialized hobby. Today, it stands as a cornerstone of modern conservation biology and Preservation Herpetology. The controlled reproduction of species ex-situ serves as a critical mechanism for safeguarding global biodiversity. Primarily, successful breeding programmes within reputable facilities directly satisfy the demand of the market and all interested parties. By providing legally and ethically produced offspring, these initiatives effectively undermine the economic viability of poaching. This substantially reduces the pressure of illegal wildlife trafficking on fragile wild ecosystems.
