Silent Failures in Scientific Software: On the Founding of Examen Silentii
Founding editorial of Examen Silentii (ExSil), an open journal of independent, reproducible examinations of scientific software and public research data. Using a silent error found in Project Chrono’s acceleration-level assembly as an example, it argues that verification work of this kind currently has no permanent, citable record, and describes how ExSil will publish it: tests against independent references, maintainer responses published alongside each article, and clean results accepted as well as failures.
