Drones in the News, 2019–2026: Growth, Geography and Tone of Global Drone Coverage, and How It Compares with Research and Invention

We measure how drones were covered in a global news index from January 2019 to July 2026, using 304,574 de-duplicated drone articles, and set that coverage beside 95,785 research papers (2015–2025) and 106,495 patent families (2015–2024) on drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. Six results stand out: Growth in attention. Drones took 24.73 of every 10,000 news articles in 2025, against 15.33 in 2019, a 1.61-fold rise in share. Most of the rise came after 2022. Peaks fall in months of conflict. The highest monthly share was March 2026, the month of the 2026 Iran war, at 62.93 per 10,000. Before 2026 the peak was April 2024 (42.63), the month of Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel. Geography. Ukraine (26.75), Yemen (19.88) and Russia (19.53) are the most over-represented countries by lift. Russia and Ukraine together hold 29.08% of located drone news. The United States holds 27.34% but a lift of only 0.56. Europe (2.27) and Asia (1.46) are over-represented; North America (0.39) is not. Within India, Punjab (5.1) and Jammu and Kashmir (4.73) lead; within the United States, Virginia (2.91) and Alaska (2.22). Tone and urgency. 62.1% of drone articles are negative in tone (all news: 33.6%), and 81% are rated critical priority (all news: 42.6%). Shifting attention. Drone coverage as a share of Poland's news rose 15.15-fold between 2023 and 2025, the largest rise among the countries with the most drone coverage. South Korea's share fell to 0.59 of its 2023 level, and Iran's and Nigeria's to 0.6. Research and invention. Drone papers grew from 4.95 to 24.88 per 10,000 papers between 2015 and 2025 (5.03-fold). Drone patent families published per year grew 13.56-fold from 2015 to 2024, and China's office held 80.4% of office-family records.
