A Practitioner's Perspective on LLM-Assisted Writing: Insights on Workflow Process and Cognitive Engagement

The capacity of Large Language Models (LLMs) is groundbreaking, given their ability to produce the next most probable words near perfection according to user prompts via chatbots. This represents a capacity for cognitive reasoning in learning by selecting words strategically based on an understanding of context and intent. When an AI model reaches the point where it can organize thoughts and generate structured writing, how deliberate does the ordinary human remain in cognitive engagement and freedom of choice? This paper explicitly examines LLM-assisted writing from a practical co-partner perspective, analyzing its impact on knowledge work, the functioning of overall AI workflows, and its influence on human cognition. Recent studies on human–LLM collaboration, alongside the author's nearly half a decade of practical experience, are presented to substantiate this perspective. Abstract
