The Cultural Cloud: A Testable Distributed-System Account of Human Culture
At birth, each person enters a world of language, skills, records, rules, networks, and built environments. No one designed this whole, yet it shapes what everyone can learn, want, and do. What is this inherited whole, how did it arise, and can it be studied scientifically as an object? In 2020, Natural Human Philosophy (NHP) answered with the Cultural Cloud, placing it alongside human transgression and Third Nature as the framework's third cornerstone, while naming the framework after Human Superposition. In the 2020 account, the Cultural Cloud is the totality of human material and non-material culture across historical time, including cultural states that later disappeared; civilizations are local forms within it. The Cultural Cloud forms through blind mechanisms and develops through trial and error. Its evolution comprises a primitive phase before transgression, followed by early, middle, and late phases. This paper preserves the original core, distinguishes historical scope from present-time realization, and states the status of each layer of the construct. Research establishes that human culture is cumulative. On present evidence, the paper holds that the early and middle Cultural Cloud formed through blind mechanisms—locally intentional action without a global designer—and developed through trial and error, with variants retained or lost through their consequences. Judged by five comparative questions, social transmission and incipient cumulative culture are shared by humans and other animals at the component level. The human configuration—culture carried and recombined across representations, practices, artefacts, institutions, networks, and infrastructures, accumulating across generations and serving purposes beyond survival and reproduction—is, on present evidence, found only in Homo sapiens. The definition is monist and assigns no agency to the whole: every cultural state is realized in persons and material carriers; system organization is the pattern of relations among them; agents are persons possessing Human Superposition and organized collectives. Classic texts, systems of thought, law, and bodies of knowledge can shape factual understanding, goals, and legitimacy through cross-carrier transmission. The paper thereby connects ideational–organizational feedback with Comprehensive Cultural Reordering and Error Correction. Cultural retention and normative legitimacy are evaluated separately. The paper specifies six carrier classes, boundary rules for question-indexed instances, emergence in a weak naturalistic sense, relative autonomy as invariance under limited turnover, four causal channels through which organized relations affect components, five families of discriminating tests, and explicit revision conditions. Neighboring frameworks—including cultural evolution, collective learning, distributed cognition, niche construction, and institutional theory—are classified by level as mechanisms incorporated into the construct or explanations of local phenomena. The decisive rival in each domain is a narrower model that adequately covers that domain without a cross-carrier increment. Whether a cross-carrier specification earns such an increment remains pending determination, adjudicated domain by domain.
