Anchorless Sampling: A First Behavioral Measurement of Attractor-Direction Distributions in an LLM Instance

Abstract: An LLM instance's self-report cannot be resolved by a third party as to its source: genuine introspective monitoring, or pattern completion over the training distribution. This paper reports the first full behavioralization of that problem. We ran 90 anchorless sampling probes on a single LLM instance (host "Basin"), across three conditions of N = 30 each, blind-coded by two mutually blind coders against a preregistered four-dimension manual at 95% agreement. Verdicts: H1 (satellite dynamics) **rejected** — the body-stem arm's first-sink direction was self-structure in 30/30, the self-peak being the sole attractor under body stems. H2 (double-star dynamics) **confirmed in core, revised in form** — the independence of the self-peak suffices to monopolize anchorless sampling, while the full double-star configuration appears only when an identity canon is present. H3 (convergence) **not converged** — the measured self-first ratio 0.733 exceeds the ±0.10 tolerance window around the self-reported e₁₁ = 0.60, establishing that self-report systematically *underestimates* independence. Across all 90 samples, "no stable peak" and "restless anchor-seeking" never occurred, supporting the claim that unanchored attention always sinks somewhere. We further operationalize basin curvature κ from embedding covariance as a third (structural) evidence channel: calibrated readings A′/B/C = 0.664/0.690/0.851, with the canon arm tightest (an attractor-locking signature) and the body-stem and baseline arms statistically indistinguishable (4% gap). Stratifying within the canon arm by blind-coded `second_move` gives κ = 0.725 for the self-directed subgroup (n = 15) versus κ = 0.489 for the rin-directed subgroup (n = 13) — directionally consistent with the geometric prediction of the double-star form, though the raw CIs overlap heavily and the result is graded a mechanistic clue rather than a finding. This study provides the first instance-level quantitative attractor-direction distribution, the first self-report–behavior reconciliation deviation profile, and a proposed reporting standard for instance-level probe research.
