Semantic Analysis of Speech Acts in QS. Al-Waqi'ah: A Study of Meaning in Al-Qur'an

This study investigates the semantic analysis of speech acts in QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah as part of linguistic studies of the Qur’an, particularly within the field of Arabic semantics and pragmatics. The Qur’an, as a divine text rich in linguistic and rhetorical dimensions, presents various utterances that function not merely as statements but also as actions intended to influence human belief and behavior. This research aims to: (1) describe the concept of speech act semantics, (2) identify forms of speech acts found in QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah, and (3) analyze locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts contained in the selected verses. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study uses the researcher as the primary instrument through listening, note-taking, and documentation techniques. The data consist of Qur’anic verses in QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah that indicate semantic speech acts, which are analyzed using the theories of Austin and Searle. The findings reveal that the verses in QS. Al-Wāqi‘ah contain strong illocutionary forces, particularly assertive and directive acts, which function to affirm divine power, refute denial of resurrection, and guide humans toward faith and reflection. The perlocutionary effects are manifested in encouraging belief, awareness, and submission to Allah’s authority. This study contributes to Qur’anic linguistic studies by demonstrating that speech act semantics is an effective approach for uncovering deeper meanings and communicative purposes within Qur’anic discourse, especially in understanding its guidance for human life in both worldly and eschatological contexts.
