PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENTS: A PILOT STUDY OF EDO QUEENS FOOTBALL CLUB, BENIN CITY, NIGERIA
This pilot study examined the psychometric property of 6 widely used psychological assessment instruments with specific focus on their internal consistency reliability within the context of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).The study adopted a descriptive survey research design.Twenty (20) female footballers from Edo Queens Football Club (M_age = 19.5 years, age range: 16-23 years; M_experience = 4.5 years, experience range: 2-7 years) completed the instruments involving Athlete Self-Confidence Scale (ASCS), Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), Mental Toughness Questionnaire-30 (MTQ30), Sports Motivation Scale (SMS), Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ), and Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ).Data collected with the instrument were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha statistics to estimate their internal consistency reliability.Findings of the study showed that, all the instruments demonstrated acceptable to excellent internal consistency: ASCS (α = 0.71), CSAI-2 (α = 0.79), MTQ30 (α = 0.81), SMS (α = 0.87), BPAQ (α = 0.81), and GEQ (α = 0.88).Drawing from the findings of the study, it was concluded that these psychological assessment instruments have acceptable to good internal consistency reliability when administered to Nigerian women footballers.Consequently, it was recommended among others that they should be built into the regular player evaluation protocols of Nigerian female football teams.
