RADIO BROADCASTING AS A TOOL FOR INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE PROMOTION AND LEARNING AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

This study investigated radio broadcasting as a tool for indigenous language promotion and learning among secondary school students in Ondo State.Descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. The study was guided by four research questions. All secondary school students in Ondo State formed the population of the study. The sample population consisted of four hundred and fifty (450) participants randomly selected from nine secondary schools across the three senatorial districts of Ondo State. The instrument used in the study was a self-developed questionnaire titled Radio Broadcast as Tool for Learning and Promotion of Indigenous Language in Secondary School Questionnaire (RBTLPILSSQ).The reliability coefficient of the instrument was also determined with the use of cronbach alpha statistical tool which yielded the value of 0.81.Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions raised in the study. The findings of the study revealed that radio broadcast for learning indigenous languages are not readily available in secondary schools in Ondo State. It was also revealed that the level of secondary school students' accessibility to indigenous radio broadcast was very low.It was further revealed in the study that technical issues, poor signal, non-availability of indigenous radio broadcasts in the preferred language of the students are some of the challenges hindering the use of radio broadcast. The study recommends among others that, radio broadcast should be made available by both government and private radio stations to compliment the efforts of the language teachers in secondary schools.Adequate infrastructural facilities that can support the use of radio broadcast in teaching of indigenous languages in secondary schools should be provided.
