Mapping Research on HPV Vaccination in Brazil: A Bibliometric Review of Current Conditions and Future Decisions

Abstract Purpose To analyze scientific production trends on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Brazil through a bibliometric approach, evaluating publication growth, collaboration networks, and knowledge gaps related to vaccine research and public health strategies. Methods A bibliometric study was conducted using data retrieved from the Web of Science database, including publications from 1995 to 2023. A total of 447 articles were analyzed using RStudio software and the Bibliometrix package to assess publication trends, thematic focus, and regional research distribution. Results Brazil demonstrated an annual growth rate of 8.95% in HPV-related publications since 2002, with a notable increase after 2014 following the implementation of free HPV vaccination through the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The main research topics included vaccine efficacy, vaccination coverage, and population acceptance. However, important regional disparities were identified, with most studies concentrated in the Southeast and South regions, while the North and Northeast remained underrepresented. Conclusion HPV vaccination research in Brazil has expanded significantly over the past decades, particularly after the incorporation of vaccination into national public health policies. Despite this progress, regional inequalities in scientific production persist, highlighting the need for further studies focused on vaccination awareness, access, and adherence in underserved regions to strengthen cervical cancer prevention strategies.
