Measurement, Accessibility, and Representation in the Hierarchical Field Model

Measurement, Accessibility, and Representation in the Hierarchical Field Model is a foundational methodology note defining how the Hierarchical Field Model (HFM) uses the term measurement. The lead operational definition is: Measurement is an operational process by which a system obtains or constructs a partial, channel-dependent representation of a system state or configuration from accessible observables. The note develops the consequences of this definition and distinguishes measurement from accessibility, representation, restriction, coarse-graining, readout, distinguishability, and underlying physical state. It places the measurement schema downstream of the current HFM primitive 𝔖 = (𝒜, ω, 𝔍), while explicitly avoiding commitment to a particular solution of the quantum measurement problem. The paper does not derive the Born rule, propose a collapse mechanism, provide a complete HFM quantum recovery, establish a theory of observers, or claim novelty over the broader operational and representational measurement literature. Its purpose is narrower: to establish a consistent measurement vocabulary for subsequent HFM work on individuation, persistence, accessibility, distinguishability, and the "NOT" research program. The document also distinguishes the underlying state from the representation produced by a particular measurement channel, discusses the limits of channel accessibility and coarse-graining, and records the open problems generated by the proposed schema. Research status: Preliminary.Validation level: V1 — Internal Consistency.External review: Not yet externally reviewed. This work was developed with substantial disclosed AI collaboration. AI systems were used for drafting, technical review, notation checking, and criticism; AI agreement is not treated as scientific verification. The author remains solely responsible for the content. This note forms part of the ongoing public HFM research record and is historically derived from the earlier Hierarchical Field Theory: A Unified Framework for Physical Reality research program. The current HFM framework has since undergone substantial mathematical revision, including reduction to the primitive 𝔖 = (𝒜, ω, 𝔍).
