FITNESS CENTERS AS SOCIAL SPACES: A STUDY OF SOCIAL INTERACTION AND RELATIONSHIPS AMONG MEMBERS AT PRIMA GYM SURABAYAA
This study aims to analyze the forms of social interaction among members and the process through which social relations are formed at Prima Gym Surabaya. The study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through direct observation during the internship, interviews, and documentation from January 2 to April 30, 2026. Eight informants participated, consisting of six gym members, one administrator, and one owner. The findings show that member interaction mainly occurs through conversations in the waiting room, greetings, exchanges of knowledge about training and equipment, and mutual assistance during exercise. Long-term members also help new members adapt to the gym environment. Initially simple interactions may develop into closer relations through repeated encounters. There are no formal rules requiring members to interact; social relations are primarily formed through everyday habits, openness, and willingness to help one another. From Herbert Blumer's symbolic interactionist perspective, Prima Gym functions not only as a place for fitness activities but also as a social space where members construct meanings, become acquainted, exchange knowledge, and build relations through everyday interaction.
