Space Relevant Stressors on Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Metal halide perovskites (MHP) have attracted great attention as the top junction for silicon‐based tandem solar cells due to their low additional weight and material and processing costs while still providing additional power generation compared to single‐junction silicon solar cells. Additionally, the radiation tolerance of MHP makes them attractive candidates for near‐Earth orbit power generation. Here, we report the temperature‐dependent properties of state‐of‐the‐art MHP/silicon tandem solar cells under conditions relevant for low Earth orbit (LEO). Temperature‐dependent external quantum efficiency (EQE) and photoluminescence (PL) results illustrate that the different temperature coefficients of the band edge absorption and emission for the constituent sub cells need to be considered for this wide temperature range. However, simultaneous device current density—voltage and photoluminescence characteristics measured at low temperatures indicate luminescence coupling of the metal halide perovskite re‐emission to the silicon sub cell, narrowing the difference between the sub cell current generation as observed by the difference in the operational AM0 J max and integrated J sc , which results in a very low temperature coefficient for the current generation of the tandem across a 200 °C range. Radiation degradation measurements on these tandems indicate the silicon sub cell is limiting, but that the p‐HJT‐based architecture is resilient enough in LEO for the <10‐year mission relevant for proliferated LEO constellations.
