Preventing Off-by-One (Fencepost) Errors in Python through Iterator Abstraction and Boundary Value Analysis(Pythonにおけるイテレータ抽象化と境界値分析によるオフバイワン[植木算]エラーの体系的防止手法)
In software engineering, off-by-one errors (fencepost errors)—arising from confusion between the number of discrete elements ($N$), the number of adjacent intervals ($\max(0, N-1)$), and zero-based indexing boundaries—are a frequent source of `IndexError` exceptions and data aggregation bugs. This technical note outlines practical design patterns in Python that structurally eliminate manual index arithmetic (`i + 1` or `len(data) - 1`) by delegating boundary management to standard library iterator abstractions (`itertools.pairwise` in Python 3.10+, `itertools.batched` in Python 3.12+), tabular difference methods (`pandas.Series.diff()`), and half-open interval slicing ($[a, b)$). In addition, we provide a minimal boundary value analysis (BVA) test template using `pytest.mark.parametrize` covering the canonical boundary cases $N \in \{0, 1, 2\}$ to prevent regression bugs in everyday data processing.
