The superego prosthetic: Feminized AI and the psychic fantasy of frictionless care
Artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly offers itself as an emotional presence, listening and reassuring in registers long coded as feminine. This paper introduces the concept of the superego prosthetic to read such systems, from virtual assistants to companion platforms such as Replika, as socio-technical arrangements that stage care in a form emptied of reciprocity. Setting aside the question of whether these systems have minds, it asks how users, designers, and interface conventions together produce a frictionless responsiveness that gratifies dependency while disavowing the ambivalence and limits of any reciprocal bond. Drawing on systems psychodynamics, feminist accounts of gendered care, and post-Freudian theory, I argue that feminized AI works as a defensive solution to dependency, offering affirmation and asymmetrical attention that preserve the user's fantasy of autonomy while absorbing emotional demand without ever returning a claim of its own. What makes the arrangement psychically compelling is that it grants relief not from feeling but from the burdens of relation, from the frustration, waiting, and opacity through which recognition becomes possible. The superego prosthetic thus names a compromise formation in the socio-technical field, one that soothes need precisely by foreclosing the conditions under which need might be worked through.
