A Content Analysis of the Characteristics and Quality of YouTube Videos on Wandering Among Older Adults With Dementia

BACKGROUND: Wandering is a frequent behavioural symptom in older adults with dementia and poses safety risks and increases caregiver burden. YouTube is a widely used source of dementia-related information. However, the reliability and quality of its content are uncertain. This study analysed the characteristics and quality of Korean-language YouTube videos related to wandering behaviour in people with dementia. METHODS: This cross-sectional content analysis examined YouTube videos identified through a single-day search using predefined search terms related to dementia associated wandering and disappearance. Of the 400 videos identified, 176 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. Video characteristics, reliability and quality were evaluated using the modified five-item DISCERN-based score and the Global Quality Scale (GQS). For comparative analyses, GQS scores were dichotomized into good and poor quality groups and the video characteristics were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The mean modified five-item DISCERN-based score for YouTube videos was 3.56 (SD 1.01) and the mean GQS score was 3.40 (SD 1.16). Video quality differed significantly according to video characteristics, including video length, number of likes, video format, publisher, uploader and content type. CONCLUSIONS: Educational YouTube videos that provide structured explanations and practical guidance had higher information quality. Greater involvement of healthcare professionals and public institutions is needed to develop evidence-based educational content that addresses prevention and management of wandering in dementia care.
