A Categorical Functorial Framework for Phenomenal Structure in Open Physical Systems: Integrating FEP, IIT, Orch-OR, GNWT, AST, and Quantum Darwinism

This preprint proposes a conceptual and categorical framework, denoted Q, for relating thestates of open physical systems to phenomenal structures. The framework integrates principlesfrom the Free Energy Principle (FEP), Integrated Information Theory (IIT), OrchestratedObjective Reduction (Orch-OR), Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNWT), AttentionSchema Theory (AST), and—new in this version—Quantum Darwinism (QD), incorporatedas Theory Q.We formulate Q as a candidate functor between a quotient category of open physicalsystems and a category of phenomenal structures. The physical equivalence relation is definedindependently of Q, in terms of invariance of causal, access, attentional, and homeostaticstructure under admissible physical transformations. The theoretical framework is rewritten around Zurek’s program of environmental decoherence:environment-induced superselection (einselection) of stable pointer states, thepredictability sieve, the redundant proliferation of information about pointer observablesinto environmental fragments, and the operational emergence of objective classical states.Quantum Darwinism supplies the physical account of stable, redundant, and intersubjectivelyaccessible records, and is incorporated into the access component W(S) of the physicalinvariant. It is explicitly not proposed as an explanation of phenomenal character. The component structure of Q is made explicit as a candidate structural mapping from theaugmented physical invariant to the phenomenal tuple: content, quality, unity, temporality, and subjectivity are each linked, as explicit hypotheses, to specific physical descriptors, including a finite-resolution dynamical descriptor for phenomenal temporality. This work does not claim that Q has been derived from first principles or experimentallyvalidated. Instead, it identifies the definitions, dynamical assumptions, thermodynamicconstraints, and falsification protocols required for such a framework to become scientificallytestable. The stochastic model presented here is explicitly phenomenological. The Orch-ORcontribution is an additional postulate, not a consequence of Penrose–Hameroff theory. Thecentral result is an explicit candidate specification whose categorical consistency and empiricaladequacy remain to be established: Q can be formulated as a hypothesis-generating framework, but it remains unproven and requires independent empirical validation.
