Fragility of steel transmission monopoles under hurricane wind loading: Part I - Static framework

This preprint presents a framework to derive parametric wind fragility functions for steel transmission monopoles from a static analysis, and applies it to 230 kV single-circuit (Class 3) and double-circuit (Class 6) poles. The structural model combines age-dependent corrosion, bending in two directions including the eccentric weight of the conductors, and wind loads based on gust response factors. A Monte Carlo campaign over 1000 combinations of wind approach angle, pole age, conductor span and design wind speed gives a fragility function for every combination with a feasible pole design (705 for Class 3 and 520 for Class 6), and generalized linear models turn them into closed-form equations in the four variables. Part II, a companion record, extends the framework to the dynamic response. This is a preprint of a working paper and serves as a project report of the Atlantic Marine Energy Center (AMEC). It has not been peer reviewed.
