A Forward-Looking Perspective on Ulvan–Chitosan–ZnO Edible Films: Insights from Binary Systems and Analogous Food-Packaging Nanocomposites

The growing interest in sustainable food packaging has drawn attention to edible films derived from marine polysaccharides. Ulvan, a sulfated polysaccharide derived from Ulva lactuca, exhibits bioactive and film-forming properties, but its high hydrophilicity and limited mechanical performance limit its use as a standalone packaging material. Researchers have used chitosan and ZnO nanoparticles separately to improve the antimicrobial, optical, mechanical, and barrier properties of biopolymer films. However, no edible film containing ulvan, chitosan, and ZnO has been experimentally reported. Thus, this article presents an evidence-based perspective rather than a review of an established ternary system. Critically integrate experimental results from films containing ulvan, ulvan–chitosan complexes, chitosan–ZnO nanocomposites, and analogous anionic polysaccharide–chitosan–ZnO systems to distinguish demonstrated interactions from extrapolations. Based on this evidence, we propose a conceptual framework and a testable experimental roadmap that addresses polymer charge balance, nanoparticle dispersion, structural characterization, food-specific performance, Zn2+ migration, toxicological evaluation, and sensory acceptance. This perspective defines the evidence needed to determine whether the proposed ternary system produces additive, antagonistic, or synergistic effects and identifies the conditions necessary for its future evaluation as an edible coating for perishable foods.
