Life cycle and techno-economic assessment of green hydrogen production via water electrolysis with BESS: An Indian perspective

This work undertakes a techno-economic analysis (TEA) and cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) of green hydrogen production in the Indian context, particularly from the oil and gas sector perspective. The system boundary is consistent with the MNRE guidelines, and India-specific operating conditions are used. Using economic allocation, the GWP for AWE and PEMWE electrolysers is found to be 18.65 kg CO 2 -eq/kg H 2 and 18.01 kg CO 2 -eq/kg H 2 , respectively, much greater than the 2 kg CO 2 -eq/kg H 2 target. The corresponding production costs are $ 6.81/kg H 2 and $ 6.32/kg H 2 for the two electrolyser technologies. 42% reduction in electricity price through integration of solar power achieves target production cost of $ 2.5/kg H 2 by 2025, as promulgated by the Indian government. TEA of replacing the existing refinery SMR unit with a green hydrogen plant suggests that the use of oxygen as a revenue source is essential for economic feasibility.
