A Decade of Hypospadias Search Behavior: Implications for Patient Education, Counseling, and Access to Care
A BSTRACT To characterize what the public worldwide and in India is searching for, regarding hypospadias over a 10-year period, identify gaps in information-seeking and derive actionable recommendations for patient education, counseling, and access to care. Google Trends was accessed in March 2026 to retrieve monthly search data for January 2016–March 2026 (123 months) across worldwide and India-specific regions. Twenty-six secondary search terms spanning clinical, educational, and subtype domains were analyzed for India using a validated multi-batch design with “hypospadias surgery” as the common reference term across seven batches. Five comparator pediatric urological conditions were examined in a single session. Mann–Kendall trend testing, Mann–Whitney U comparisons across predefined Coronavirus disease 2019 periods, interrupted time series analysis and Benjamini–Hochberg false discovery rate correction were applied throughout. Both regions showed significant rising trends in search interest, stronger in India (τ =0.380, P < 0.0001) than worldwide (τ =0.245, P = 0.0001). India showed no decline during the pandemic (+0.7%, P = 0.736), followed by a large postpandemic surge (+36.3%, P < 0.0001). The most searched term in India was “hypospadias meaning” (accounting for 64.2% of surgery-related searches), while “hypospadias cure” and “hypospadias fertility” returned zero search activity. Hindi-language searches grew by 500%–800% and “hypospadias surgery cost” was the top surgical query. A consistent February peak was observed in both regions. Phimosis dominated all comparator conditions. The typical Indian family searching for hypospadias information has just encountered an unfamiliar diagnosis and needs a basic explanation, not surgical detail. Hindi-language content, financial transparency in counseling, proactive discussion of long-term outcomes and seasonally timed awareness campaigns are immediate priorities for the pediatric surgical community.
