Efficient Placement of Micro-Phasor Measurement Units to Enable Full Observability in Stressed Power Distribution Networks
Strategically placing micro phasor measurement units (µPMUs) across the area of concern is made necessary by the shift from conventional power distribution networks to smart power distribution infrastructure. Previous studies in this field have shown promising results when applied to balanced systems. Most real electricity supply systems are inherently unbalanced. Therefore, it is highly challenging to monitor the whole network with the extensive deployment of µPMUs in this kind of architecture. This research reframes the problem description and offers a method for resolving the challenges of µPMU placement in unbalanced power delivery systems. In order to efficiently monitor the stressed distribution infrastructure, this work aims to develop a cost-effective approach for deploying µPMUs. An Indian 19-bus and a modified IEEE 34-bus unbalanced radial distribution systems (URDSs) were used to demonstrate the suggested approach, which takes into consideration anticipated future breakdowns on the stressed lines. The application of integer linear programming (ILP) to the optimal µPMU planning (OMPP) problem is further supported by this paper.
