Effects of two jumping-based training models combined with small-sided volleyball games on aerobic fitness, technical skills, and psychophysiological responses in amateur male volleyball players

This study primarily compared the effects of combining small-sided games (SSGs) with plyometric training (PLY) or jump rope training (JRT) on aerobic capacity, while secondarily examining changes in physical performance, technical skills, and psychophysiological responses in amateur volleyball players. Thirty-two male players were randomly assigned to either the SSGs + JRT or SSGs + PLY group and trained two times per week for twelve weeks. Approximately 20 min of 2- and 3-a-side SSGs were played on smaller volleyball courts. The SSGs + JRT group performed 3 sets of 30–50 s of jumping rope, while the SSGs + PLY group performed 3 sets of 30–50 s of continuous jumping at 120 b/min. Physical testing included a Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1, a 20 m sprint test, vertical jump tests, a T-drill test, and technical skill tests. The ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), internal training load (ITL), and physical enjoyment (PES) were also determined. A significant time × group interaction was observed for VO2max responses (F 1,30 = 23.508, p < 0.001, η p 2 0.439 [large effect]), with the SSGs + JRT group demonstrating greater improvements than the SSGs + PLY group. Moreover, the SSGs + JRT group induced higher RPE, ITL, and PES responses than the SSGs + PLY ( p ≤ 0.05, d range: 0.76 to 1.53). No significant between-group differences were observed for the other physical and technical responses. Combining SSGs + JRT is a more effective alternative training strategy than SSGs + PLY for improving aerobic capacity, while simultaneously providing greater ITL and PES without compromising other performance outcomes.
