Relational Consensus and Gendered Differentiation: The Ranked Structure of Ideal Partner Preferences Among Chinese University Students

Relational qualities are highly valued in ideal partners, while women and men differ in the weight they attach to resources and physical attractiveness. It remains unclear whether these patterns reflect competing ideals or different emphases within a broadly shared preference hierarchy. Using top-three partner criteria reported by 4704 undergraduates from 12 Chinese universities, this study examines how desirable partner characteristics are ordered when respondents must prioritize among multiple options. Exploded rank-ordered logit models showed that relationship-sustaining qualities accounted for 82.4% of first choices and remained the most common domain at the second and third ranks. Status-security and eligibility-related attributes appeared more often at later ranks. Relative to women, men were less likely to prioritize status-security attributes and more likely to prioritize eligibility-related attributes. Higher family socioeconomic status was associated with greater relative emphasis on status-security attributes, whereas university tier showed no independent association after adjustment. More egalitarian gender-role attitudes and current romantic involvement were associated with greater emphasis on relationship-sustaining qualities. The results indicate substantial agreement in the highest-ranked relational qualities, alongside gendered and socially patterned differences in the weighting of other partner characteristics.
