When Risk Measures Disagree: Evaluating Risk Under Non-Normal Returns

This paper explores how statistical measures of risk, categorized as standard, downside, or market sensitivity measures, perform when returns are not normally distributed. Many investment theories, such as Modern Portfolio Theory, assume an approximation of normality. The point of this paper is to see whether different risk measures maintain or convey less information to the investor as higher moments of distributions become relevant.

Abstract

This paper explores how statistical measures of risk, categorized as standard, downside, or market sensitivity measures, perform when returns are not normally distributed. Many investment theories, such as Modern Portfolio Theory, assume an approximation of normality. The point of this paper is to see whether different risk measures maintain or convey less information to the investor as higher moments of distributions become relevant.
