Expanding Mentorship for Practicing Counselors: A Call to Action
Mentorship supports counselor career development, satisfaction, and retention; however, little is known about mentorship opportunities for practicing counselors. This study examined mentorship programs offered by branches and divisions of the American Counseling Association, focusing on initiatives for practicing counselors. Using systematic online searches and direct outreach, programs were analyzed for scope, target populations, and structure. Findings indicate that formal mentorship for practicing counselors is limited and constrained by reliance on volunteers, organizational transitions, and scarce resources. Despite these challenges, existing programs demonstrate promising practices. Recommendations are provided to organizations, counselor education programs, and employers to expand mentorship access and sustainability.
