The Intersection of AI and Emotional Intelligence in Leadership: Augmenting Human-Centered Decision-Making

Emotional intelligence (EI) the capacity to perceive, understand, regulate, and leverage emotion has long been recognized as a defining trait of effective leadership. That recognition now faces a new test: artificial intelligence is becoming embedded in the modern workplace, and with it comes a real opportunity to augment, rather than replace, the emotionally intelligent leader. This paper looks at where AI and emotional intelligence meet in leadership practice. Affective computing, sentiment analysis, and conversational agents are increasingly able to help leaders read team climate, tailor communication, and make decisions that are both empathetic and data informed. I trace the specific mechanisms through which AI can sharpen self-awareness, empathy, and relationship management, while weighing the real benefits stronger engagement, more inclusive decisions against genuine risks: surveillance, bias, and the slow erosion of authentic human connection. Drawing on illustrative use cases and a look at adoption patterns across industries, I argue that AI delivers the most value to leaders not as a replacement for judgment, but as an emotional mirror and decision aid one that strengthens human judgment while keeping accountability, ethics, and genuine empathy firmly in human hands.
