The current state of technology integration in teaching and learning in Ethiopian public applied universities

Technology is a powerful modern tool that can enrich pedagogical practices and enhance student learning. To evaluate the current state of technology integration in teaching and learning, this study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design. The study used the technology organization environment (TOE) model to contextualize technology integration in teaching practices and support student learning. Quantitative data were collected from 316 instructors, while qualitative insights were gathered through purposive interviews with 12 academic leaders. Descriptive data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23, and qualitative data were used in a spreadsheet, coded, organized, and thematically analyzed. The study results indicate that there is a high mean score (M = 3.79) instructors’ technology integration in teaching practices and instructors technology integration in supporting student learning also has a high mean score (M = 3.52). In addition, the analysis of correlation statistics indicates a strong positive relationship between instructors technology integration for teaching practices and instructors technology integration for supporting student learning, contributing ( r = .61, p <.01). Qualitative insights highlight that technology integration by instructors is likely to change the way they interact, replacing traditional teaching methods with technology based teaching and supporting students as they gain effective learning knowledge. Furthermore, the transition from paper-based to online assessment has reduced the burden on instructors in correcting students’ tests and exams. Study results demonstrated that Ethiopian public applied universities do not encourage paperwork activities; rather, they promote technology integration across all aspects of the universities. These results provide both theoretical and practical insights contextually for researchers and academicians, offering a valuable baseline for future study.
