Hyperreal control of the psyche and intermedial simulation of subjectivities in Cosmopolis (2003/2012): A text–screen relational analysis

This research paper aims to explore the intricate but dynamic relationship between literary text Cosmopolis (2003) and its film adaptation (2012). The focus of this research is to analyse the role of verbal and visual signs, symbols and images in representing hyperrealist environment of control. This study also highlights the intermedial role of a literary text and its film adaptation in the representation of simulated individual subjectivities. The study further investigates the nature of film adaptation as an intertextual entity and its contribution towards manifestation of human perception in addition to its literary source. The study of both Cosmopolis (2003) along with its film adaptation (2012) of the same title, is quite significant as it strengthens the immense contribution of signs, symbols and images in mediating the human consciousness which is governed by the logic of consumption through media and technology. The study is qualitative in nature, and it highlights the latent and manifest structures of psychological power and control through theoretical insights of Linda Hutcheon and Jean Baudrillard. The study is also helpful in providing quality education and inclusive learning which is SDG# 4 by promoting critical thinking which helps the individuals to form better understanding of the society.
