COVARIANT FORMULATION OF CURVED SPACE-TIME ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD EQUATIONS

The tensor form of Maxwell’s equations in curved spacetime is studied using the metric tensor, the covariant derivative and the electromagnetic field tensors. The covariant homogeneous and inhomogeneous equations, charge conservation and the Einstein–Maxwell system are discussed and illustrated for the Reissner–Nordström metric.

Abstract

The tensor form of Maxwell’s equations in curved spacetime is studied using the metric tensor, the covariant derivative and the electromagnetic field tensors. The covariant homogeneous and inhomogeneous equations, charge conservation and the Einstein–Maxwell system are discussed and illustrated for the Reissner–Nordström metric.
