Toward a Reconstruction of the Ecosophical and Intersectional Meanings of the Qur'an

This study aims to reread ecologically oriented Qur’anic verses through an integrative paradigm of ecosophy and intersectionality. Previous readings of ecological verses have often been separated from, or even overlooked, the perspectives of vulnerable groups. This study therefore offers a novel perspective on how ecologically oriented verses can be interpreted through an integrative paradigm. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the study synthesizes ecosophy and intersectional feminism as its primary theoretical approach. The main research objects are Qur’anic verses relevant to ecological problems. The keyword al-arḍ (earth) is used as an initial analytical entry point, leading to the identification of 11 central verses that indicate a relationship between ecological and intersectional problems. The findings demonstrate a more inclusive reading by elaborating ecosophy and intersectional feminism as an integrated lens for interpreting ecological verses. Five Qur’anic principles are identified: the principle of tawhid and spirituality, responsibility and devotion, Allah’s absolute ownership, transformational praxis, and ecological egalitarianism. The latter serves as the central principle of the intersectional-ecosophical paradigm, viewing ecological problems as interconnected with intersectional forms of vulnerability.
