Spring Boot in Modern Java Backend Development: A Review
Backend development is an essential component of modern software applications because it manages business logic, databases, authentication, application programming interfaces, and communication between clients and servers. Java has remained an important programming language for backend and enterprise application development because of its portability, object-oriented programming model, extensive ecosystem, and mature development tools. However, traditional Java web development often requires considerable configuration and management of application infrastructure. Spring Boot addresses many of these challenges by providing an opinionated framework for developing standalone, production-oriented Java applications with reduced configuration. It supports automatic configuration, starter dependencies, embedded web servers, database integration, RESTful web services, security, testing, monitoring, and deployment. This paper presents a review of Java-based backend development using Spring Boot. It discusses the architecture and major components of Spring Boot, dependency injection, auto-configuration, Spring MVC, REST API development, database connectivity using Spring Data JPA, security mechanisms, application monitoring, advantages, limitations, and emerging trends. The review also discusses the suitability of Spring Boot for enterprise applications and microservice-oriented systems. Existing literature indicates that Spring Boot provides a productive development environment, although application complexity, resource consumption, distributed-system challenges, and security configuration remain important considerations. The paper concludes that Spring Boot provides a comprehensive ecosystem for developing scalable and maintainable Java backend applications.
