Technical guideline for sediment bypass tunnel (SBT) planning

This paper introduces the “Technical Guideline for SBT Planning” which summarizes the procedures for consideration during the planning of sediment bypass tunnels (SBTs) and points to note for the design and management of SBTs. When considering the applicability of SBTs, a preliminary evaluation can be made using the standard study flowchart for SBT planning. This flowchart is designed to systematically and standardly evaluate the applicability of SBTs, and the criteria for judgment in this flowchart have been established based on case studies of SBTs in Japan and overseas. This paper also shows that it is important to consider future maintenance in the design and management of SBTs, and to understand the impact on the environment of rivers downstream of dams.
