Comparison and Analysis of Grid Code Compliance in the Integrated Renewable Energy and Traditional Power Grid System: A Review
The electric power system has seen an increase in the reliance on renewable energy sources as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel power generation in the 21st century. The two sources have different dynamic behaviors in how they generate electric power; their integration with one another has become a major challenge in the power grid system. That has forced the utility users to develop a system for grid code compliance to ensure that the existing grid remains sustainable and efficient in transmitting electric energy from the generation stations to the end users. This paper reviews grid code compliance solutions that power system designers can utilize for a better integration of renewable energy power plants into the traditional power grid, looking solely at the fault ride-through (FRT) capabilities. The study further gives recommendations for consideration in the renewable energy plants’ designs and the FRT controller designs.
