GLOBALIZATION OF AYURVEDA: NAVIGATING REGULATORY CHALLENGES AND GLOBAL MARKET STANDARDS

With rising global interest in holistic healing and herbal remedies, Ayurveda is steadily going global. Even so, taking this traditional Indian system of medicine to international markets comes with major regulatory bottlenecks and tough compliance standards abroad. This study looks into the key roadblocks coming in the way of Ayurveda’s smooth global rollout, chief among them being the lack of uniform international regulations. While back home in India these formulations are duly recognised as traditional medicines, Western markets like the US and the European Union club them as mere dietary supplements or complementary products. This classification severely curbs manufacturers from making clear therapeutic claims, thereby hurting market reach. On top of that, issues surrounding quality control—namely heavy metal toxicity, product adulteration, and a shortage of concrete clinical data on safety and efficacy—remain serious pain points. To address these shortcomings, the paper calls for streamlining standards internationally via bodies like the WHO and ISO. It takes stock of ongoing initiatives in scientific validation, chemical fingerprinting of raw herbs, and the strict enforcement of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). In conclusion, a practical roadmap is laid out for government bodies, researchers, and pharma players to join hands globally. Merging classical Ayurvedic wisdom with modern, evidence-backed scientific protocols is the only way forward to tackle stringent foreign norms and establish Ayurveda as a credible, mainstream healthcare system worldwide.
