An On-Demand Application Installation Platform for Agricultural Decision-Making on Mobile Devices

Nowadays, maximizing agricultural productivity and profitability increasingly relies on timely analysis of heterogeneous information sources, including field sensor measurements, weather conditions, and market trends. Consequently, mobile agricultural applications using smartphones have been expected to provide the required rich functionality. However, most existing ones adopt monolithic architectures, resulting in excessive application sizes and limited extensibility. In this paper, we propose an on-demand application installation platform that integrates real-time IoT sensor data, weather information, and commodity market data on mobile devices. Through Dynamic Feature Delivery and feature modularization, this platform enables users to activate only the services required for specific farming tasks, thereby improving accessibility while minimizing unnecessary resource consumption. The platform was implemented on a Samsung Galaxy A55 smartphone and evaluated in practical agricultural monitoring scenarios. Experimental results show that the integrated information services effectively support representative operational and market-oriented farming activities while reducing the initial application size from 48.7 MB to 15.1 MB. Dynamic modules were activated within 1.0–1.3 s, and backend services achieved an average response time of 0.71 s under the tested configuration. Furthermore, the platform successfully handled approximately 200,000 environmental records collected over five months, demonstrating its capability to support continuous agricultural monitoring and practical information utilization. These results indicate that the proposed platform provides an efficient and extensible foundation for mobile-based data-driven farming applications, enabling integrated information access while minimizing unnecessary resource consumption.
