Development of an infographic design framework for public communication of personalized cancer therapy

Personalized cancer therapy (PCT) has become a central paradigm in modern oncology, yet its core concepts-genomic variability, biomarker analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based decision-making-remain difficult for the general public to understand. Improving visual communication is essential for enhancing health literacy and supporting patient-centered care. This study employed a design-based research framework integrating literature review, concept modeling, visual metaphor development, and iterative prototype refinement. Core elements of PCT were analyzed and translated into a structured infographic system consisting of four narrative modules: (1) cancer formation, (2) principles of personalized therapy, (3) NGS and genetic profiling, and (4) patient-centered care workflow. The final outputs included an animated educational video, an infographic poster, and a public-facing booklet. The proposed infographic framework effectively visualized the sequential processes of PCT through color-coded pathways, simplified anatomical schematics, and personified cellular characters. Storyboard-based modules depicted cancer development, genetic variability among patients, differences between conventional and personalized therapies, and integrated clinical workflows. This study presents a systematic and replicable design methodology for visualizing PCT. By translating complex oncologic concepts into intuitive visual narratives, the infographic system enhances public comprehension and supports patient-centered communication in precision oncology. These findings highlight the utility of information design as an effective medium for bridging the gap between clinical expertise and public understanding.
