Sediment transport analysis in the Ebro River lower course

The main objective of this study is to analyze sediment mobilization during the controlled flood of May 5, 2022, in the lower course of the Ebro River, downstream of the Ribarroja Dam. During this event, a test campaign was carried out, including flow gauging and measurements of turbidity and suspended sediment concentration. This information has allowed the numerical simulation of the lower course of the Ebro River from the Flix Dam to its mouth using the Iber model, a 2D Eulerian model based on the first-order finite volume scheme. For this purpose, the suspended sediment transport module was used, which solves the advection-diffusion equation, employs the Van-Rijn erosion and sedimentation model, and solves the Exner mass conservation to study bed evolution. The results of the numerical modeling are consistent with the test campaign and validate the Iber model for analyzing suspended solids transport in the study area.
